Where The Bullet Stops

   A lieutenant in the United States Army on some far-off battle front and his buddy were sent on an important mission. When the enemy discovered them the lieutenant faced them, saying to himself, "Lord, it's your responsibility now." As he reached for his carbine, a shot from one of them struck him in the breast and blasted him down. Thinking he was dead, his pal grabbed his carbine and blasted away with both guns. He received three bullet wounds, but when he finished not one of the enemy was left. The lieutenant wrote his sister in Pennsylvania: "He was amazed when I rolled over and tried to get up. The force of that bullet had only stunned me. Dazedly, wondering why, I pulled my Bible out of my pocket and in utter muteness looked at the ugly hole in the cover. It had ripped through Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and kept going. Where do you think it stopped? In the middle of the Ninety-first Psalm, pointing like a finger at this verse, 'A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.' I did not know such a verse was in the Bible.... In utter humility I said, 'Thank You, Precious God.'

A Friend

"When troubles come your soul to try,
You love a friend who just stands by;
Perhaps there's nothing he can do,
The thing is strictly up to you;
For there are troubles all your own,
And paths the soul must tread alone,
Times when love can't sooth the road,
Nor frendship lift the heavy load.
But just to feel you have a friend,
Who will stand by till the end,
Whose sympathy through all endures,
Whose warm handclasp is always yours,
It helps somehow to pull you through,
Although there's nothing he can do,
And so with fervent heart we say:
'God bless the friend who just stands by.'"

When Orders Conflict

     A young man about to enter the regular Army was conversing with an old soldier.  The latter had been giving him some strong advice on the subject of obeying orders.  "But suppose, General," said the young man, "orders sometimes conflict.   What am I to do in a case like that?"  "Well, in the first place," replied the old soldier, "they never will.  At least, if they emanate from the persons who have the right to order.  If you find yourself at some time seemingly subject to such conditions, you may depend upon it that there has been a mistake somewhere. In that case, however, the safe way is to find out who the superior is and obey him."
     There are a good many times in ordinary life when at first glance orders seem to conflict.  In times like this the safe plan is to take the old soldier's advice and obey the superior.  You remember that at one time Peter and John were ordered by the magistrate to quit preaching.  I have no doubt that under ordinary circumstances these men would have given heed to the voice of the officers of the law.  But in this case there was the order not to speak, from the magistrates, and the order from God to not hold their peace. The settled the matter by obeying the superior Cmmander.

The Lord Hath Blessed

When our soul is much discouraged
By the roughness of the way,
And the cross we have to carry
Seemeth heavier every day;
When some cloud that overshadows
Hides our Father's face from view,
O 'tis well then to remember
He has belssed us hitherto.

Looking back the long years over,
What a varied path! And yet
All the way His hand hath led us,
Placed each hindrance we have met,
Given to us the pleasant places,
Cheered us all the journey through,
Passing throught the deepest waters,
He has blessed us hitherto.

Surely then our hearts should trust Him,
Though the clouds be dark o'erhead;
We've a Friend that draweth closer
When all other friends have fled.
When our pilgrimage is over,
And the gates we're sweeping through,
We shall see with clearer vision
How He's blessed us hitherto.

Keep On Praying

"Though the foe of right oppress,
    Keep on praying;
God is ever near to bless,
    Keep on praying;
Let not fear your heart appall,
Naught of evil can befall,
Stronger is your God than all,
    Keep on praying.

"Pilgrim, have you weary grown?
    Keep on praying;
God is still on the throne,
    Keep on praying;
He will hear your faithful cry,
He to help is ever nigh,
You shall conquer by and by,
    Keep on praying.

"Christian, has your faith grown weak?
    Keep on praying;
Do the tears roll down your cheeks?
    Keep on praying;
Soon you nevermore will sigh,
Tears no more shall dim your eye,
Pray to Him who's ever high,
    Keep on praying."
